THE GSS STAR LEAGUE
Our character of granting our beloved parents the privilege to participate actively in the decision making and operations of the school gave birth to the groundbreaking Good Shepherd Star League. This unprecedented programme is a brainchild of one of our dear parents, Mr. Agbaje. Being a good listener and a progressive, our Chairman bought the idea instantly as he shared it with him. Today, it is a celebrated programme relished by our pupils, students, staff and parents.
Unlike the conventional inter-house sports event, the GSS Star League transcends sports. It is all-inclusive, entailing debates, essay writing, spelling bee, Bible quiz, traditional dance, art work, drama, in addition to indoor and outdoor sporting events. Most significantly, it is operated like a professional sports league as it takes place throughout the academic year, and not restricted to just one or two weeks like the conventional inter-house sports competition.
The merits of this laudable initiative cannot be overemphasized. The Star League has assisted our pupils and students to discover their hidden talents. Through this programme, talents in various skills and sports have been unearthed, and are being polished and motivated. Also, the programme offers our students the platform to display and hone their talents.
In addition, the Star League has helped to trigger a competitive spirit in our students. As they compete in various skills and sports all year round, their competitive spirit is activated which proves beneficial in their academics and future aspirations. Also, their participation in brain-tasking games such as chess and scrabble has assisted in boosting their mental abilities which consequently aids their comprehension in the classroom.
The Star League has sparked a new wave of immeasurable delight among our students. They eagerly look forward to the event days, which are every Tuesday and Wednesday. Schooling has been made more fun-filled and fulfilling for our students while their academic commitment and excellence have been sustained and enhanced.
Just as the entire programme is unique, so also are the names of the clubs. Our students are divided into four Star League clubs: Belledison, Cullinoor, Blinkmond and Rhopalla. You might be wondering what the names mean. Actually, Belledison is the combination of the names of the two world's greatest inventors, Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. Belledison's official colour is green. Cullinoor is derived from the combination of the two most expensive diamonds in the world: Cullinan and Koh-i-noor. And its official colour is yellow. Next is Blinkmond, which is coined through the merging of the two most expensive gemstones in the world: Blue Diamond and Pink Diamond. Blinkmond's official colour is blue. The last, but not at all the least, is Rhopalla, with colour red being its official colour. The name is coined through the merging of the world's most expensive metals: Rhodium and Palladium.
With the plethora of merits of this innovative programme, we are poised and resolute to sustain and boost it. It is our belief that this tremendous initiative would facilitate the production of global super stars and world-beaters who would utilize their talents and accomplishments in bringing positive transformations to their country and the world at large.
